The mystical poetry sung in the samā‘ unites the themes of the lover and the beloved, of spiritual intoxication, of the nostalgia related to being separated from a loved one, or of our divine essence.

These internal states, accentuated by dance, are the effects of spiritual intoxication, which manifests as a feeling of total surrender and the forgetting of one’s self, culminating in the extinction within the divine presence. In this way, the Samâ’ acts as a remedy for our souls and food for our hearts.
